I Love TOO Hard

Clearly, I had a rough week.

My health is good.  My husband and children are good.
And things are s-l-o-w-l-y getting back to "normal."

But, school and friendship have tossed some difficult challenges my way...and navigating through these has been painful.  Continues to hurt my heart.

In fact, I've lost quite a few tears this week over the above stated stresses.

It appears that I just love so hard.  "Too hard," I actually stated.  And in that statement, I suppose, I was insinuating that if I did NOT love so hard, so much, so completely, so unconditionally...then I wouldn't be so hurt when life's paths, for me and others, goes in different directions.

I almost had myself convinced that "TOO HARD" was actually possible.  That I needed to try not to become so attached.

But, then, Friday evening, I got this:

...and my slight doubt about loving TOO much disappeared.

You see, I love these two faces, my paternal grandmother and my brother, so much it takes my breath away.  For a variety of reasons, the largest being our locations, Grandma, J.T. and my paths do not cross very much.  If I had not given so much of my heart to loving these special people, then I wouldn't miss them, and consequently, wouldn't feel sad about not having them be a part of my life.

But if I had not loved them, loved them SO hard, I wouldn't have memory after memory after memory of sweet, wonderful, hysterical, happy, and special times.

  So. Darn. Special.

Summary:  If you never loved to begin with, you lose all the moments and reasons you loved the person in the first place.  And THAT is not something I am ever willing to let go of...
For, some of the greatest lessons and moments in my life were spent in their company.

Which does not make me regret loving them TOO much.

It makes me grateful that I GOT to love them at all.

So, I shall slightly adjust my thinking about it NOT being about ME.

It is about ME.  About me doing what my heart tells me.

And my heart strongly...DEEPly...advises me to love with all I've got.

Just the way Jesus did..and still does.

And I know I will continue to face anguish in the face of all that love.  It is just life.  So, it is confirmed that I will still shed a tear or twenty over hurt feelings or loss...

But those tears are nothing, compared to the happiness that comes with them.

I realized, with that one simple photo, that love...sharing love...is an action that I am not prepared to lessen in my life.

For MY selfish reasons and for HIS Kingdom.

Ummpphh.  THAT feels so good.

God is good.  He listens.  He knows.  And I am grateful that I love Him, too much, too...

For the return far surpasses the investment.

P.S.  Dear God, Thank you for those two faces.  Thank you for their presence in my life.  Thank you for the act of forgiveness.  Thank you for love.  Complete, 100%, consequence-ignoring, Agape Love.   Amen

It's NOT about YOU!

I know this, of course.  I do.  Although some of my immediate family would not agree, I know how to put others before myself.  I actually am pretty good at it.  I care about other's smiles, other's needs, and other's happiness usually before I do my own.  I also attend an incredible church that does not just preach, but lives "church" daily.  In order to do that, often you must sacrifice your own wants, to put the needs of those Jesus puts in your path, first or even, instead.

One of PCC's most famous mottoes is "It is not about YOU."

Every time Pastor Brian gears his message towards that topic or even makes that statement, I nod my head in agreement, and feel confident that he is correct and even pat myself on the back, saying, "Yep.  It's not.  It's about His people and sharing His love."

It is an area I am pretty good at...and I thrive in loving on, taking care of, or spending time comforting people.  It is truly one of my gifts and one that I am grateful for....and that thankfulness continues each time I "get" to put someone else before me....by loving them in one kind gesture or another.

But, this is what I want to know?  What if your HEAD knows that it is not about YOU, but your heart won't listen?  What if your heart will not stop making it about YOU?  And YOUR feelings?  And YOUR loss?  And the tears will not stop and you cannot even begin to have a rational conversation about it because YOU begin to sob?

What then?

Pray, yes.  But, if I pray anymore for God to take away the anger...and complete sadness......

Well, actually, I don't think I can pray anymore about it.

So, I need a practical way to deal. And not hurt others in the process.

And as of right now, I cannot find one.

Deep, heavy-hearted, sigh.  Being all grown up is sometimes so darn hard.

Anger

Things are changing.

Change that is not necessarily, bad, but different.

I suppose different is the definition of change, huh?

Either way, my heart hurts.

And worse...I am angry.

And I do not know how to deal with it.  Anger is not my emotion.  I do not like it.  I wish it would just go away.

But, it won't.

How do you deal with anger, when the hurt is towards a person or persons that you care for very deeply?

Help.

I. Hate. Confrontation.

I  know anger is "biblical".  It is the how to deal with anger part that I am struggling...deeply...with.

I repeat: HELP.

Worse Than Death

Death IS terrible.  Our world has been so completely surrounded by it lately, whether due to war, floods, earthquakes, or tragic murders and early-disease causing deaths, that it is impossible not to think about it.  It being death.  And the why is never as important as the end result, the what: death is still permanent and leaves a hole larger than the Grand Canyon.  And a crater... that big... can be filled, but that takes years, upon years...and teaspoons of dirt to do so. And in between that time, whether years or decades, is a mountain-full of hurt.
So, the dark cloud of lost life floating above our world lately, combined with my past and how far I have come, made me think a lot on this topic I am going to speak on. Death is awful.  No doubt.  But, I began to wonder if there is anything that makes you feel worse than losing someone.  Then I read one of my favorite bloggers posts and I knew I, too, had to share my history and my feelings on the topic of the Big "D." If not for my own healing necessities, but for my children's true understanding of my lessons on the topic.  Here is to hoping, through my pain and challenges, they will avoid some similar mistakes and/or be able to handle their own trials with even greater strength.

DIVORCE

To me there are a FEW things worse than death:

A) Going your entire life without knowing the love and forgiveness of Jesus and the peace that comes with that.
B) Watching your children hurt or seeing them face a pain and there being NOTHING you can do about it.
C) Losing someone way too soon.
D) Living your life selfishly.
E) Getting a Divorce.

Thankfully, I have no issues with option A.  Options B and C are inevitable and we all face those upheavals.  Letter D...I spend much time and effort, not neglecting myself, but offering sacrificial love in His name.  But, E?  Well, not everyone has to climb that mountain.  God never meant us to.  'Cause, it really, freaking hurts.  It is destructive to your insides, which normally reflects on your outsides.  You should know know know know KNOW that you are marrying who GOD intends for you to marry before you utter the words, "I do."  For the cancellation of that vow, the day you sign your name on the "I don't," is equally as horrible as death...in my humble opinion.  In fact, it is a kind of death...

I am so happy today, at this point in my life, that I literally come to tears when I think about where I am, compared with where I have been.  (Sigh. Very, content sigh.)  But, my life, especially my adult life, has held more heavy hearted days than times of elated, joy.  Part of it was because of my lack of a safe, loving environment and part of it was poor choices.  There were many times when I didn't see happiness because the ache was too deep.  And because I allowed the pain of loss to take over, I made even bigger mistakes, which ended in results that could not be undone.  All is forgiven if love is true, and God does, indeed, offer true 110% grace.  But the scars and pains never, completely, dissolve.  And neither do the consequences...or the memories of those choices.

So, if you never, ever have to face the failure, known as divorce, you will never have any pains or scars to try to erase.

All that pain will just be filled with love.

Love that is so, so, very worth the wait.

I was not patient and did not seek the advice of my Father, first.  So, I faced this giant named 'break-up', this Goliath, twice.  Even saying those words, "I've been divorced, twice," hurts.  I feel like such a horrible failure to such a degree that I do not allow myself to think about it for too long.  When I married Ryan, I was in love with his complete acceptance, his unconditional love, his laugh, the way he lit up a room, and the way he made every day, no matter the circumstances, fun.  I still am in love with him for the same reasons; but in the way one is in love with their brother or a very close cousin.  We could have, should have, been best friends from the beginning, and stayed that way.  We both could have saved each other so much heartache.  My heart, my instinct, knew that.  But I did not listen to those inner whispers...at all.
Now, I would never trade our marriage, life, history, love, or creation of our son, Austin, for anything.  Every second of the pain was worth it.  But that is easy for me to say now that I am on the opposite end.  When I was "in" it, when I was miles from the top of the mountain, I was fairly certain I would never see the other side.  I did get there, thankfully.  However, the trek up was an exhausting adventure.

Through His strength, my determination, and a lot of love from a lot of people, I did conquer divorce and its pain.  But it took years, and even a second marriage and divorce, before that happened.

I allowed Ryan to have that divorce in 2002, but I never really accepted it.  I loved him, I loved his family, I loved our life, and I loved our son, so somewhere deep inside I believed he would return to us.  It was not until 2008, after years of therapy and scores of Sunday lessons, I loved myself enough...to let him, and our past, go.

Phewww.  It was like letting go of a million pounds of rocks over a cliff once you have carried them for almost 10 years.  And I now have pecks of memories and moments of happiness that I would never trade, especially the moment where we shared the birth of our son.

My second marriage? That marriage was too much too quick and we both our inner voices told us differently.  Neither of us listened and even though both of us could throw blame at the other, it is easiest to just say that our personalities are too opposite and we just could not make our differences reconcilable.  It was a costly marriage and divorce; both emotionally and financially.  And even though, I have many lessons that I can take from that union, and a beautiful daughter, I also had many disfigurements of my heart, that took years to repair.  And even still, some bruises will always remain...

Worth it?

Of course.  Because I have two perfectly healthy, funny, talented, and wonderful children.  And I would not trade any hurts from the past for either of them...

And I would never want to trade in the life-changing lessons I've gained, either.

So, my conclusion, is this.

Yes, it was worth it and no, it wasn't.

I cherish my children, I cherish my emotional growth, but I do not cherish the stigma that the word "divorce" holds, or the mountains of sleepness nights, or the river of tears, or the piles of debt...all which ALSO came from marrying, without consulting with and listening to, Him.

I love Austin and I love Chloe.  I love my present, and permanent, husband so much that I forget that I am not in a dream.  I love my job and I love my church.  I, truly, love my life.

But, it took a long, uphill, rocky path to get here.  Through Divorce One Lane and Divorce Two Alley.  And I often think what I could have done for the Kingdom, for my family, and for myself...if I had heeded to His voice and never had to face this heartbreak...that's worse than death...twice.

I'm just saying...

Thankfully, He offered me His Grace...and more second chances than I deserved...and I am blessed, happy, loved, and serving, and all is truly, well.

But, I just wanted to say, that even when you are forgiven, the consequences of your choices remain.

Just believe me and maybe you won't have to learn it the hard way.
Because, seriously...the hard way is just like it sounds: really, darn HARD!

Kelley with an E's Delicases: Mexican Casserole and Smores Pie

Mexican Casserole

This is one of our favorite casseroles....the kind that you cook for someone else for a meal as they come to visit or for you to drop off as they heal...and when they take the first bite their eyes cross from the ecstasy of the taste.

Make it.  You won't regret it.  Kudos to Mrs. Cornett who gave me this original recipe in 1988, that I have doctored up and altered... Mmmmmmmmmm.

Ingredients
1 lb ground meat/shredded chicken
1 package taco seasoning mix/water
1 can cream of chicken soup
1 can of creak of celery soup
1 15 oz can of evaporated milk
1 can chopped chiles (mild, med, hot)
2 cups shredded cheese
1 can of refried beans
1 pkg soft flour tortillas

Preparations
*Brown meat and drain.
*Add taco seasoning and 1/3 C water and simmer.
*In a pot, heat soups, milk, chiles, and 1 2/3 C of cheese.
*Heat beans in the microwave with two spoons of water to a spreadable consistency.
*Pour some cheese sauce in a baking dish.  Spread a tortilla with beans and put on top of sauce.  Sprinkle the tortilla with 1/4 of the meat mixture.  Repeat until all ingredients are gone.  Sprinkle the top with the rest of the cheese, covered with foil, and bake for 20-25 minutes, or until cheese in bubbly, at 350 degrees.
*Remove the foil and top with lime strips, crushed Doritos or Frito's and place under boiler until browned on top.
*Serve with chips, salsa, sour cream, lettuce, tomatoes...or a fresh salad with ranch dressing.

To. Die. For.

Smores Pie

This dessert was "invented" the other night when my husband said he had a hankering (Buckingham language is funny) for something sweet and I have been avoiding the grocery store.  I opened the pantry and this is what I concocted.  It was a smashing hit.  At home and at school!

Ingredients
1 box of large chocolate pudding
milk
1 graham cracker crust OR crumbs to make your own crust
1 bag mini marshmallows
1 Hershey bar

*Either make your own crust according to box directions or open the pre-made crust.
*Prepare pudding according to directions and pour into crust.
*Top with marshmallows and push down lightly with hand.
*Break up the Hershey bar into the small chunks and push each piece down into the pie.
*Sprinkle with a handful of graham crackers or graham cracker crumbs.
*Cover and chill for 6 hours or overnight.

You will be the hit of the "office"!  I was! :O)

Dear Alex,

This weekend Uncle Brian and I had the wonderful opportunity to spend a few days with you.  Austin, Hollyann, and Chloe were also very excited!  Even though there was a pool to play in, a lake to splash in, and stores to shop in...they could barely wait until you arrived.  Your smile, the articulate way you clarify and speak on such advanced topics, and your in-depth knowledge and memory, especially about Ocean Life...just makes all of our hearts melt.

Man, do we love you.

And it is easy to see why...

You put a "Sparkle" in our hearts

Snuggling with Cousin Austin

I hope you do not mind that I always take pictures of your beautiful face.  But...you, Mommy, and Daddy live in Roanoke and we live all the way out here in "Buck", therefore, we do not get the opportunity to see each other enough.  My solution? I capture as many moments as I can, on film, to be sure we remember and cherish each and all of our times with YOU.  Always know how special you are, Sweet Little Boy.

And know that we love you...a bushel and a peck and a hug around the neck (which is old people language for "A LOT").

Love,
Aunt Kelley
